Programming

Nestled into the curves of the Vermillion River, Bellwether Farm is a camp, retreat, and education center dedicated to exposing the wider community to the creation that sustains all of life. As a working farm, its life focuses on four primary activities.

Prep Cook/Market Garden Support

Bellwether Farm seeks an ambitious Prep Cook to assist in our Farm to Table dining operations. You’ll perform routine kitchen tasks such as setting up workstations and ingredients, preparing salads and side dishes, assisting guests during meal service, and after meal dishes. A great prep cook will be quick and diligent and willing to improve on the job. When time allows, you'll help in our market garden operations planting, cultivating, harvesting and processing vegetables for use in our kitchen.

Responsibilities

  • Follow the prep list created by chefs to plan duties
  • Label and stock all ingredients on shelves so they can be organized and easily accessible
  • Prepare cooking ingredients by washing and chopping vegetables, cutting meat etc.
  • Undertake basic cooking duties such as reducing sauces, parboiling food etc.
  • Prepare simple dishes such as salads, entrees etc.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly kitchen by washing dishes, sanitizing surfaces, taking out trash etc.
  • Ensure all food and other items are stored properly
  • Comply with nutrition and sanitation guidelines
  • Perform other kitchen duties as assigned
  • Act as support in our market garden operation planting, weeding, harvesting, and other various farm needs

Requirements

  • Proven experience as prep cook
  • Knowledge of health and safety rules in a kitchen
  • Manual dexterity able to operate cutting tools and kitchen utensils
  • A team player with good communication skills
  • Patient with an ability to stay positive under pressure
  • Willingness to complete workplace trainings such as ServSafe, Safe Church/Safe Communities, and Racial Reconciliation Training.
  • Ability to be on foot for the duration of your shift, moving around the gardens and kitchen as needed to complete the required tasks.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is desirable; Training from a culinary school will be an asset
  • Be available 20-30 hours per week, with the flexibility to accommodate our guest group needs on various days and hours. Weekends are required.
