Programming

Nestled into the curves of the Vermillion River, Bellwether Farm is a camp, retreat, and education center dedicated to exposing the wider community to the creation that sustains all of life. As a working farm, its life focuses on four primary activities.

Guest Host

The Bellwether Farm Residential Guest Host is part of the Bellwether Farm staff community and provides gracious hospitality to all our guests, volunteers, residents and staff. The Residential Guest Host’s primary responsibility is to attend to the needs of guests and groups while they are at Bellwether Farm. The host is “on call” and responds to guests’ needs and questions as they arise.

JOB DUTIES

Prepare for Group Arrival:

  • Complete a thorough walkthrough before guests arrive to ensure meeting areas and lodging are safe, fully prepared, and welcoming.
  • Verify that exterior lighting at all lodging areas is on and functioning properly.
  • Check temperature controls so rooms are comfortable upon guest arrival.
  • Ensure all equipment, including audio-visual systems, is set up and tested in advance.
  • Prepare fireplace and fire pit areas so they are clean, safe, and ready for guest use.
  • Confirm that dining and meeting spaces are arranged according to the group’s needs.
  • Assist with guest arrival by welcoming, shuttling, or checking in guests during the designated arrival window.

Host Overnight Groups:

  • Remain on the premises while serving as the on-call host to ensure timely support for guests.
  • Support the kitchen team with meal service and cleanup, and serve as a liaison between guests and kitchen staff.
  • Monitor the beverage station throughout your shift, keeping it clean, organized, and well stocked.
  • Make group announcements and deliver the Welcome talk.
  • Conduct regular, respectful walk-throughs of facilities to ensure spaces remain clean, orderly, and in good working condition.
  • Promptly report maintenance or repair issues that affect guest comfort or safety (such as plumbing, HVAC, or property damage) to the Property Manager, and manager on call when immediate attention is needed.
  • Remain available and responsive to guest needs while on duty.
  • Follow all guidelines outlined in the Hosting Manual.
  • Respond to urgent maintenance or safety concerns during evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Walk the campus in the morning and evening to ensure pathways are well lit and areas are safe and ready for guest use.

Follow-up After Guest Departure:

  • Monitor energy use by confirming that heating and cooling systems are returned to their default settings, lights are turned off, and windows are closed when not in use.
  • Conduct walkthroughs of all rooms and facilities to identify any cleaning needs or required repairs.
  • Confirm that all guests have departed at their scheduled time before leaving the property.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to provide warm, attentive hospitality in a retreat, camp, hotel, or similar guest-facing environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to welcome guests and represent Bellwether Farm in a professional manner
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and respond calmly to unexpected situations
  • Reliability and punctuality, with the ability to remain on site and on call during assigned shifts, including evenings and weekends
  • Basic comfort with facility operations, including adjusting thermostats, operating A/V equipment, and identifying maintenance concerns
  • Ability to walk the property multiple times per shift and work indoors and outdoors in all seasons
  • Ability to use a smartphone for communication, reporting, and coordination

BENEFITS & REQUIREMENTS:

Residential Guest Hosts are offered modest lodging accommodations during their stay and meals.

1) Full day of training specifically for Residential Guest Hosts

2) Trial weekend with another host before being put on the Bellwether Farm Guest Host rotation

3) Serve 5-12 multi-day hosting assignments per year
