Programming

Nestled into the curves of the Vermillion River, Bellwether Farm is a camp, retreat, and education center dedicated to exposing the wider community to the creation that sustains all of life. As a working farm, its life focuses on four primary activities.

Summer Staff / Camp Counselor

Overview: Bellwether Farm Summer Camp is a residential summer camp for youth in grades two through twelve. Bellwether Farm (BWF) is a Christian ministry owned by the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio. Located on 225 acres in rural Wakeman, Ohio, BWF offers camp and educational experiences focused on friendship, fun, and farming.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A passion for caring for and working with children
  • Ability to support the theological doctrine and practices of the Episcopal Church
  • Comfortable with building a loving and inclusive community through supporting, teaching, leading, and empowering others.
  • Ability to perform potentially strenuous physical activities (hiking, camping, swimming, farming/gardening, etc.)
  • Willingness to give and receive feedback.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid certified, or willing to obtain

Responsibilities:

  • Act in a professional manner as a role model in behavior, character, and language for all campers, volunteers, and fellow staff.
  • Teach socially acceptable behaviors to campers by serving as a role model and by using age-appropriate positive reinforcement and behavior management strategies.
  • Actively facilitate friendships between campers, and handle group issues in a fair and age-appropriate manner.
  • Ensure all cabin activities and camp programs support the mission, vision, and values of Bellwether Farm and The Episcopal Church.
  • Ensure that the cabin is a clean, tidy, and physically and emotionally safe environment at all times
  • Know where the campers in your cabin are at all times.
  • Assist campers with personal care as needed, ensuring that campers develop a positive daily routine.
  • Be familiar with all information available on each group of campers, including the medical and behavior alert lists, and any other information provided by the support staff.
  • Assist as needed with planning and leading all camp activities, including but not limited to arts and crafts, sports, social recreation, songfests, nature hikes, and other games and hobbies.
  • Be fully aware of all safety and emergency procedures, and execute procedures when required, including ensuring that campers are aware of and understand all safety rules.
  • Comply with all policies and procedures as listed in the staff contract, manual, and staff orientation, including “Safe Church” policies for the protection of children and youth from abuse.
  • Attend and participate in required training and planning sessions
  • Other duties as assigned.

Desired Specific Qualifications: At least 19 years old at the beginning of the summer season; experience working with children; experiencing teaching others; experience leading group activities.
